アジャイル開発の効果

アジャイル開発の導入によって実現された主な利点は、チームが内容領域専門家（Subject Matter Expert）にあまり頼らなくなり、さまざまな分野でチーム全体内でのクロス・トレーニングを重視し始めたことにあります。チームがクロス・ファンクショナル（各メンバーが1人でいろいろな仕事をこなす）だと、だれもがどんな開発タスクでも担うことができ、製品のどの部分の仕事でも扱うことができるようになります。このようにして、特定の人材に依存してしまう結果生じる障害を開発プロセスから除くことができるのです。

SteelEyeの新製品、DataKeeperを開発する過程において、数々の障害や機会が訪れました。幸いなことに、それらの障害を克服することができ、また多くの機会をうまく活用することができました。いくつかの新しい技術を学び、新たな開発プロセスを導入することによって、生産性を向上させ、究極的には高品質の新しい製品を生み出すことができたのです。

クロス・トレーニングは製品の異なった部分についても研究し、新技術を使う新たな機会をチームのメンバーに与えることができます。すでにその技術に詳しいメンバーがほかのメンバーを指導することによって、チーム全体が必要な情報をすばやく把握できるようになります。結果的に、クロス・トレーニングを活用することによって生産性を向上させ、チームに新たに学習する機会を提供できるのです。

One of the key benefits that was realized as a result of our adoption of Agile development was that the team began to rely less on subject matter experts, and instead began to emphasize cross-training of the entire team in different areas. In a cross-functional team, anyone can perform any development task and can work on any part of the product. In this way, bottlenecks due to personnel dependencies are removed from the development process. Cross-training also gives team members new opportunities to delve into different parts of the product and to use new technologies. Those who are already familiar with these technologies are able to mentor others, so the team can come up to speed quickly. In the end, we became more productive and were also able to present new learning opportunities to the team, due to our use of cross-training.

Numerous obstacles and opportunities presented themselves in the course of developing SteelEye’s new DataKeeper product. Fortunately, we were able to overcome the obstacles and take advantage of the many opportunities. We managed to learn several new technologies, adopt a new development process, increase our productivity, and ultimately deliver a high quality new product.
